The Foundation Hub is designed for children aged 5-10 who are beginning their literacy journey. Through interactive, evidence-based learning, your child will build a strong foundation in reading and writing, setting them up for future success.

The 7 workshops within Hub 1 build on the skills learned in the previous one, providing clear guidance on when your child is ready to progress to the next workshop. The content in this hub is designed to align with the first six months of schooling under The New Zealand Curriculum.

What Your Child Will Learn

✔ Recognise letters by learning their names and the sounds they make.
✔ Develop writing skills by practising correct letter formation.
✔ Blend sounds to form simple words.
✔ Progress to reading and writing short sentences with confidence.

Is This the Right Hub for My Child?

To check if your child is ready for this hub, try this simple test:

  1. Reading Test: Have them read the example words in the hub images.
  2. Spelling & Writing Test: Read a word from the example list aloud and ask them to write it on a piece of paper (without looking at the screen).

How to Interpret the Results:

  • If your child cannot read or write all the words correctly, this is the perfect hub to start.
  • If your child can read all words fluently (without breaking them into sounds) and spell/write them correctly, they may be ready for Hub 2.

Hub FAQs

How long do I have access to a hub?

You have lifetime access to all workshops in the hub(s) you purchase.

What resources come with the hubs?

  • 7 - 10 Interactive workshops (30-45 minutes each).
  • Engaging self-paced video workshops taught by a New Zealand Literacy expert
  • Printable Word Whizz paper to help structure the lesson during the writing component.

How long does each workshop take?

Each workshop takes around 40 minutes, but every child is different—some may take longer or shorter.

What is my role as a parent or tutor?

We recommend that an adult actively supports their child’s learning. This helps you understand their progress and guide them when needed. Parents, grandparents, and tutors can all benefit from learning alongside children!

What device do I need?

We recommend using a laptop, computer, or iPad for the best experience. An iPhone or small-screen device is not suitable.

Do I need to download any software?

No downloads are required! Workshops are delivered via an online link. After purchasing, you'll receive a link to access your hub(s).

How does Word Whizz help children with learning difficulties like dyslexia?

Our Structured Literacy approach is research-based and highly effective for children with dyslexia. It provides:

  • Step-by-step, systematic teaching
  • Repeated practice at different levels (letters, sounds, words, and sentences)
  • Unlimited access to workshops so children can revisit lessons as needed

Research shows children with dyslexia may need 3-4 times more practice than their peers, which is why we offer ongoing access to all workshops.
