The Explorers Hub is designed for children aged 5 - 10 years who have already mastered basic sounds and digraphs and are ready to expand their understanding of how letters work together to form more complex words. This hub introduces long vowel sounds and letter teams, helping your child advance their reading and writing skills.
Each of the 8 workshops builds on the previous one, reinforcing literacy through structured, evidence-based learning to improve fluency and confidence. The content in this hub is designed to align with the second year of schooling under The New Zealand Curriculum.
What Your Child Will Learn
✔ Recognise and apply long vowel sounds and letter teams.
✔ Read and write words with more complex spelling patterns.
✔ Develop confidence in reading and writing full sentences.
✔ Strengthen fluency by practising new sounds in structured lessons.
Is This the Right Hub for My Child?
To determine if this hub is the right fit, try this simple test:
- Reading Test: Have your child read the example words within the hub images.
- Spelling & Writing Test: Read a word from the example list aloud and ask them to write it on a piece of paper (without looking at the screen).
How to Interpret the Results:
- If your child cannot read and spell/write all the example words, this might be the correct hub to start.
- Please also complete the test in Hub 1 & 2 to confirm that your child has mastered all the skills in these hubs, ensuring they are ready to progress to Hub 3.
- If your child can read all words fluently (without breaking them into sounds) and spell/write them correctly, they may be ready for hub 4.

We recommend using a laptop, computer, or iPad for the best experience. An iPhone or small-screen device is not suitable.

No downloads are required! Workshops are delivered via an online link. After purchasing, you'll receive a link to access your hub(s).
How does Word Whizz help children with learning difficulties like dyslexia?
Our Structured Literacy approach is research-based and highly effective for children with dyslexia. It provides:
- Step-by-step, systematic teaching
- Repeated practice at different levels (letters, sounds, words, and sentences)
- Unlimited access to workshops so children can revisit lessons as needed
Research shows children with dyslexia may need 3-4 times more practice than their peers, which is why we offer ongoing access to all workshops.
